Flash downpour floods Bay of Plenty homes

Dozens of houses across the Bay of Plenty have been hit by flash flooding overnight.

MetService issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Hauraki, Western Bay of Plenty and Tauranga just after 8pm on Monday.

Fire and Emergency were called out to assist 13 residents in Rotorua, in the eastern suburbs of Owhata, Lynmore, and Hannah's Bay, whose homes bore the brunt of a heavy downpour, which started at 6pm on Monday.

Shortly after it was Tauranga's turn, with crews called to a further 25 houses in need of assistance.

Video taken by locals shows the extent of the flooding after just a short period of rain.

A Fire and Emergency spokesman says the downpour was short and sharp, with everything settling down by 9:30pm.

The thunderstorm warning for the Bay of Plenty has since been lifted.

Bay of Plenty police warn motorists should take extra care on the roads on Tuesday morning due to surface flooding in parts of the region.

Drivers are asked to limit their travel if possible.
