Kevin 'Chalky' Carr raises $100k for 7yo who lost her mum to cancer

A new charity to help people affected by cancer has reached its first target - raising $100,000 in just three months for a seven-year-old who lost her mum.

Jennie and Alan Lunn lost their daughter Kellie to breast cancer just four months ago.

They've become full-time carers for their granddaughter, Isla, who is coming to terms with the loss of her mum.

Her story touched the heart of former All Blacks logistics manager Kevin "Chalky" Carr, who is dealing with his own terminal cancer diagnosis.

Upon hearing about Isla, he set up a charity to help others. In just three months he's raised $100,000 for a nest egg for when she's older.

"For the amount of people that have donated, I've just got to say a massive, massive thank you to everyone who's been so generous," he says.

Now the Chalky Carr Trust is expanding into a second chapter to fund new chemotherapy seats for Christchurch Hospital. Former Black Stick Gemma McCaw is a devoted patron.

"What I love about this is opening doors for others and seeing what can be done for other people in situations like this that are really tough - just absolutely delighted to be involved."

Despite his own illness, Carr says he's focused on improving the lives of people like Isla.

"It's always been my principle. Even when things have been bad, I've always known that there's someone worse off than me. So if we can continue to help people that are worse off than me I'll be over the moon."

Little Isla may not get her hands on the cheque right now, but it will help secure her future.
