The search for a missing diver is expecting to kick off again this morning in Wairarapa.

The man was diving with two friends but got into trouble at Flat Point Beach yesterday afternoon.

Sgt Peter Rix says helicopters, fishing vessels and even the Navy failed to find him on Sunday.

Surf lifesavers have had a busy first weekend on patrol. More than 11,000 people took to the beaches in the Northern region alone, with 17 having to be rescued.

Three of them required major first aid.

There were a further three searches and 11 people assisted from the water.

Lifeguards had to take preventative action against nearly 900 people.
