NZTA lists horror Christmas holiday traffic hotspots to avoid

  • 07/12/2017

The NZTA has a message for people planning to get away for Christmas and New Years - start preparing now.

Traffic will be high on major stretches of highways across New Zealand, leading to long queues and frustrated drivers. Some areas are expected to have heavy traffic flows for up to nine hours a day.

The NZTA has put together a guide of the worst affected areas based on previous travel patterns, and is warning motorists to take notice.

"Every holiday period and long weekend we see large numbers of people heading out of the main centres to popular holiday destinations and this can cause queues and delays," it says.

"To help alleviate these problems we recommend planning your travel well in advance and travelling outside the busiest periods."
