Severe thunderstorms set to strike North Island

  • 18/12/2017

Brace yourselves, North Islanders - the dry season is coming to a close for now.

A front travelling over the upper half of the country on Monday carries the threat of thunderstorms for almost the entire island, with heavy rain and some hail anticipated.

The Bay of Plenty could be hit the hardest, with MetService warning that there's a moderate risk of downpours of 25mm to 40mm per hour in the afternoon and evening.

The front travels from the Cook Strait this morning through to Northland by nightfall, and humid conditions have the potential to bring thunderstorms for everywhere north of Manawatu.

Those living in Auckland, the West Coast, and central parts of the North Island have also been told there's a moderate risk of thunderstorms. The latter have been told to expect hail.

The South Island faces no risk of storms today except for Nelson and western Marlborough, MetService says.

Later this week, strong southwesterly gales are anticipated in the South Island as another front moves north up the country, with a chance of heavy rain in Fiordland on Thursday.
