An Auckland man has detailed the moment two men threw glass objects at the windscreen of his car from an overbridge, while he was driving home from a trip to Potaka.

Paul Lee had been fishing at Lottin Point on the Gisborne-Bay of Plenty border on Saturday, and was driving back in the early hours of Sunday morning when the incident occurred.

In a Facebook post, he said he was travelling at about 100km/h when something was dropped from the Parton Rd overbridge onto the Tauranga Eastern Link, where his car was.

"A sudden glass object fell from the bridge over my car," he wrote.

"When I suddenly stopped quickly and checked, my windscreens were all broken. Fortunately no one was hurt. When l looked ahead... l noticed two men running away."

After managing to drive home with a significantly cracked windscreen, Mr Lee was then able to check his vehicle properly and worked out what was likely to have happened.

"Pieces of green glass were found where I am assuming the two men threw beer bottles over my car," he said.

"I think this is a very serious type of crime that can cause massive accidents and serious human casualties in a car driving at high speeds on a private road.

"I wanted to report this to the public to make sure everyone knows and to be aware in order to prevent it which can happen again."

Mr Lee has reported the incident to Auckland Police, Tauranga Police and the Tauranga City Council, among other organisations.

He is pushing for a barrier to be placed on the bridge to prevent such incidents occurring again.
