The official weather forecast for Christmas Day is out, and it looks like it'll be a good one for most of the country.

MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin told Newshub that today's weather is an accurate prediction for what Christmas Day will be like.

"It will be pretty similar, almost a carbon copy," he says.

The North Island is currently under a ridge of high pressure, meaning clear skies and warm temperatures.

On December 25, Auckland will be fine with a high of 24degC. Chances of cloud and isolated afternoon showers increase further down the North Island and could be on the cards for Taupo, which will have a high of 22-23degC.

Rotorua is set for a high of 21degC, while Wellington will see similar weather to the rest of the island, with a high of 22-23degC.

Mr Doolin says the festive forecast for the South Island is more of a mixed bag, due to a front moving up the country in the lead-up to December 25.

The East Coast should stay warm and dry until after Christmas dinner, with the evening possibly bringing some rain.

Christchurch is set to be the hottest place in the country on Christmas Day, with a high of 30degC. Kaikoura isn't far behind with a high of 29degC, while Blenheim will hit 26degC.

Central Otago will be a little cooler, with highs in the early 20s.

Unfortunately, the forecast isn't as good for the West Coast, which will likely be seeing heavy rain, wind and possibly some thunderstorms.

The South Island's front will move up to the North Island on Boxing Day, spreading a band of rain across the country as the day progresses.
