Three people have been taken to hospital after emergency services were called back to the scene of a gas leak in central Auckland.

A dozen people were sent to hospital and dozens more seen by paramedics following the incident on Victoria Street West on Thursday morning.

Now emergency services are back at the scene, evacuating Augusta House (Qantas' Auckland office) floor by floor.

People are being triaged as they come out of the building.

Three people have been hospitalised in a stable condition, and 12 others are being assessed.

They are displaying similar symptoms as those reported this morning, namely headaches and nausea.

Early reports suggested people were seen convulsing but they were inaccurate.

Fire and Emergency assistant area commander Dave Woon says the priority is to ensure everyone's safety, and emergency services will not try to identify the cause of the gas leak until the morning.

"We need to have a serious look at what's going on here. I believed we'd covered all our bases previously but we'd missed some."

He did discount claims that the gas leak was caused by diesel fumes.

The entire building will remain closed overnight.
