Malcolm Rewa has failed in his bid to block retrial over the murder of Susan Burdett.

Rewa was found guilty of raping 27 women, including Ms Burdett, in December 1998. Ms Burdett was raped and murdered in her South Auckland home in March 1992.

He was tried twice for the murder of Ms Burdett, but a stay in proceedings was issued after neither jury could agree on whether he was guilty.

Teina Pora was arrested for the crime one year after the death and wrongly convicted. Rewa served 14 years in prison for Ms Burdett's rape, and Teina Pora served 20 years in Paremoremo Prison for Ms Burdett's murder - but his convictions were quashed in 2015.

Mr Pora received $2.52 million in compensation for the wrongful conviction, which was later adjusted for inflation to $3.5 million.

Rewa is due to stand trial again in February next year.
