Puni School reopens after suspicious fire

A rural south Auckland school will reopen on Wednesday after a suspicious fire gutted a classroom and damaged two others.

Puni School in Pukekohe was forced to close for the first two days of term two because of the fire. The incident is one of 16 to hit the area in 10 days.

Principal Haydon Brill says he's been overwhelmed with the community support. Five schools are holding mufti days to raise some relief money for Puni School.

"Virtually every principal in the area has touched base to say 'look, we can help out with furniture'. We've had transport companies offer to take things away," he says.

Mr Brill says the teacher whose classroom was destroyed has been working at the school for a decade. Police are looking for at least two suspects.

"We're absolutely very angry and frustrated," he says.

"I'd imagine this person's not well and needs to go get some help."
