'Loud explosion' heard as trucks burned in Southland fire

A Southlander was "terrified" after hearing a "loud explosion" and seeing trucks on fire.

Fire and Emergency told Newshub the fire was reported in a transport yard on Seaward Road, Edendale, at around 7:15pm on Saturday.

They said two trucks were "well alight" when they arrived. Fire and Emergency called on other crews from nearby areas to help with the response.

A video sent to Newshub shows Saturday night's blaze, with smoke billowing into the air.

The person who sent the video said they were "terrified" to see the fire because there were houses nearby.

After talking with fire investigators, Fire and Emergency said it's been found the fire is not suspicious, but it's currently not clear how the fire started.

The fire was out by 9pm. They also don't know the size of the trucks that were on fire.

A police spokesperson told Newshub they attended the fire for traffic management and also said it isn't being treated as suspicious.
