Emergency services battle bus blaze on Waikato Expressway

Emergency services are trying to contain a "well-involved" bus fire in Waikato on Friday evening.

Police have closed the northbound lanes of the Waikato Expressway at Ōhinewai, just north of Huntly, a spokesperson told Newshub.

Diversions are currently being put in place - but it could be several hours before the road is cleared, they added.

The bus caught fire while it was being towed.

Nobody was on the bus when it burst into flames, a spokesperson from Whakaratonga Iwi/Fire and Emergency told Newshub.

Two fire trucks are still at the scene, they said.

The fire was reported just after 8pm to both Police and Fire and Emergency.

A witness who saw the bus ablaze at about 8:30pm told Newshub they were a passenger in a car going the opposite direction.

"Cars were starting to stop behind it, [they] couldn't get past due to flames."
