The flag debate has sparked a lot of interest and even a bit of mischief in one central Otago community.
Residents of Letts Gully are proudly flying their designs of choice outside their homes, but a late-night flag thief has also been at work.
Doug MacKenzie is passionate about flags and decided to fly the black and blue fern design outside his home as a talking point.
One day the flag was stolen and had been replaced with the traditional New Zealand flag.
But a day later someone had taken down the New Zealand flag, replacing it with an All Blacks silver fern.
