Sir Jerry Mateparae has been discharged from hospital after undergoing surgery to have a heart valve replaced.

The Governor-General is now recovering at Government House in Wellington following the successful operation.

The problem with his heart was picked up during a routine check in October.

In the meantime, Dame Sian Elias will undertake Sir Jerry's constitutional duties until December 15.

He won't make any public appearances until the New Year to allow him to recuperate fully.

Sir Jerry thanked the medical staff involved in his care.
