Prime Minister Bill English donates broken phone to Tokyo

Prime Minister Bill English has donated a busted mobile phone to the people of Tokyo.

Mr English gave the unwanted telephone to Japan's most popular politician, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike.

But he wasn't just dumping some trash, it's a deposit for what's called an "urban mine" - recycling old metal for new use.

Mr English says he hopes the phone will be recycled into metal to be used in medals at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics - and hopes that New Zealand will win plenty.

There is gold in the components of mobile phones.
