Kiwi paraglider Nick Neynens is quickly discovering the Red Bull X-Alps is as gruelling as it is beautiful.

Neynens is just over halfway through his sport's toughest event, where participants fly and hike more than 1000 kilometres from Austria to Monaco.

"The thing about the X-Alps is it's an incentive to fly as far and as fast as you can," he says.

So far Neynens has flown 321 kilometres and hiked for 254.

He is currently 28th of 32 starters and on the German-Austrian border – about 180 kilometres behind Switzerland's three-time champion Christian Maurer.
