Little known American, world number 36 Coco Vandeweghe is through to the Australian Open semi-finals with a 6-4 6-0 win over Spain's Garbine Muguruza

Seventh seed Muguruza, who is also the defending French Open champion, was considered the pre-match favourite in the Hisense Arena clash.

It was yet another surprise result in Melbourne in what’s been a topsy-turvy tournament on both sides of the draw.

Having comfortably defeated number one seed Angelique Kerber in the fourth round, New Yorker Vandeweghe appears to be the form player in the ladies draw and coming to the boil perfectly.

Her last four clash with Venus Williams promises to be a cracker, with the 13th seed defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-4,7-6 to reach the semis.

Vandeweghe has won the Junior US Open in 2008 and two WTA titles, with her best Grand Slam performance previously coming at Wimbledon in 2015 and a quarter-final exit.

The semi-final line-up will be completed tomorrow, when fifth seed Karolina Pliskova plays Mirjana Lucic-Baroni and Serena Williams takes on Johanna Konta.
