A return to Super Rugby in 2017 is looking on the cards for Tasman five-eighth Marty Banks with the 27-year-old reportedly back training with the Highlanders.

He was supposed to leave New Zealand Rugby for Italy at the conclusion of the Mitre 10 Championship after signing with Pro12 outfit Benetton-Treviso back in May.

However, according to the Otago Daily Times, Banks reportedly remained in New Zealand and received an invitation from Highlanders coach Tony Brown to train with the 2015 Super Rugby Champions.

With Hayden Parker reportedly suffering a knee injury, Banks may be required to rejoin the squad for the upcoming Super Rugby season which kicks off in March.

The Highlanders will play the Crusaders in a pre-season match in Darfield on February 4.
