Top Five 2016: Kiwi sporting prospects

I love to rub the sporting crystal ball. With more Joseph Parker fights and a Lions tour on the way, and what's bound to be another nailbaiting season for long-suffering Warriors fans, 2017 is going to be another exciting year.

Here's a look at what could happen.

PARKER BEATS FURY/PRICE/MILLER TO SET UP JOSHUA SHOWDOWN

Whoever our WBO world champion fights next, 2017 is shaping up to be an epic year for heavyweight Joseph Parker.

When the judges gave JP the nudge over Andy Ruiz Jr he only accomplished stage one of becoming the undisputed king of the ring, a confusing whirpool of possibilities have opened up.

With Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko set to bang nine bells out of each other on April 29, if Parker can just win his next fight, he could be in line to face the winner. Either way, it's win-win!

LIONS STUN ALL BLACKS IN WELLINGTON

It's the most high-profile rugby tour in the world, and in 2017 the Lions roadshow is parking up in New Zealand.

Ten games in total, with test matches one and three in Auckland, with the pivotal showdown at Westpac Stadium smack bang in the middle on July 1.

If we assume the All Blacks take out the first game at fortress Eden Park, then test two looms large. When Sir Clive Woodward's troops landed 11 years ago, it was touted as the ultimate in sporting competition.

They lost 3-0, scoring 40 points and conceding 107. You suspect they won't be so vulnerable this time round. If the Lions can be 1-1 going into the final match on July 8, it sets up a mouth-watering finale.

MESSI COMING TO NEW ZEALAND

The convoluted journey for the All Whites to the 2018 Russia World Cup will involve an inter-confederation play-off in November next year against South American opposition.

And while Colombia and Paraguay are in the mix, a two-legged clash with Argentina would make global news.

Talisman Lionel Messi retired from international football a few months back, then changed his mind - phew!

It would be great to see one of the finest footballers the world has ever seen giving his all in New Zealand, but we all know that Andrew Durante would have the diminutive genius in his pocket!

BLUES WIN SUPER RUGBY CROWN

Remember when the Blues of Auckland had an ultra-competitive rugby team, battling it out at the highest level of Super Rugby? No, neither do I!

Well, they lost to the Reds in the 2011 semifinal, but haven't finished higher than 10th in the past five years.

So surely they're due a change of fortunes? The Blues have always tried to play an attacking brand of rugby and a return to form would be a welcome one.

FORAN AND JOHNSON ON FIRE

I know, I know - the Warriors are going to do it next year! How long have we been saying that? Well, I still believe.

The razzle-dazzlers are my favourite New Zealand sports team, partly because they're taking on the whole of Australia. And they're also not afraid of a gamble: step forward Mr Kieran Foran.

Is he mentally strong enough? Is he fit enough? Does he still have it? Answers to all of these questions will be delivered next year, and if Foran is ready and lining up alongside Mr Shaun Johnson, light the touch-paper and just step back. LET'S GONE WARRIORS!
