After securing a card on the European Tour late last year, 2017 just keeps getting better for Ryan Fox after the Kiwi delivered an impressive opening round at the Dubai Desert Classic.

Playing in conditions friendlier to golf and more conducive to lower rounds than at the Qatar Masters last week, Fox hit a four-under 68 to go into the clubhouse tied for 11th.

Only on the alternates list before the start of the tournament, Fox only learned he'd join the tournament 24 hours prior.

The 30-year-old shot six birdies and two bogeys. He held a share of fourth before dropping a shot on his final hole, the par-four ninth.

Spaniard Sergio Garcia leads on seven-under, one stroke clear of Chilean Felipe Aguilar and South African George Coetzee.

Former world No.1 Tiger Woods made a forgettable start, failing to shoot a birdie in his five-over round of 77.
