Fallen golf great Tiger Woods has pulled the plug on his latest comeback, withdrawing from the Dubai Desert Classic, citing a back spasm.

The American had a shocking opening round of 77, then made the call not to compete again.

No comment from Woods, but the 41-year-old's agent Mark Steinberg has spoken to the media.

"Spasms are a funny thing, I'm certainly no doctor but they come and go," said Steinberg.

"The fact that he feels as though it's not the nerve pain, that's very encouraging for him."

"He's had some spasms before, no doubt about it."

It was also a day to forget for Aucklander Ryan Fox, who blew out with a three over par 75 second round.

Fox is one under overall, and eight shots off the pace set by South African George Coetzee, who leads Spain's Sergio Garcia by one stroke, almost halfway through Coetzee's second round.

Play was suspended for the day due to high winds.
