Video: Alex Rullo to become youngest ever V8 Supercars Championship driver

Alex Rullo will become the youngest ever driver in the Australian Touring Car Championship when he makes his debut at Adelaide's Clipsal 500 on the weekend, aged just 16-years-old.

Driving for the Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport team, Rullo will, ironically, take the youngest driver record from Lucas Dumbrell's brother Paul in the first V8 Supercars event of the season.

"It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be racing against the guys of that calibre," Rullo said.

"Lowndes, Frosty [Mark Winterbottom], it'll definitely be exciting to grid up against them."

Despite lining up against some of the greats, Rullo's not getting carried away.

"I think Clipsall will be a big learning curve... As long as we keep it off the walls and have a clean race, I think it'll be fine."

But he's hoping to get some tips of the big boys while also being competitive.

"Biggest expectations for myself is to learn as much as I can. I think it'll definitely be a tough challenge. It's a learning year so as long as we can make the most out of it and run through our own program I think we'll have a good year."

Rullo is currently in grade 11 at high school but he's adamant that the V8s are his priority.

"I have to keep my head down at school, obviously I'm missing a lot and try to catch up when I can but obviously Supercars is the priority."

Lucas Dumbrell said it was important Rullo as well as the rest of the team enjoyed the experience.

"It isn’t every day that you have a 16-year-old debut in the main series," Dumbrell said.

"I think we're going to have a good weekend in Adelaide and a good season. . Im dying to get to the track."

The first practice session will take place on Friday with all eyes on last year's champion Kiwi Shane van Gisbergen.
