Video: Focus on youth, talent at National Track Championships in Invercargill

This year's National Track Championships will see the event make its return to Invercargill after a three year absence.

The tournament will be preparation for many cyclists who are aiming for the World Championships in Hong Kong in April.

"It's good to start the build-up towards the Worlds with a competition in Invercargill," said sprint cyclist Eddie Dawkins.

The Men's Sprint team brought home New Zealand's only cycling medal at last year's Rio Olympics, winning Silver in a close final with Great Britain.

It was a different story for the Woman's team who just missed out on Bronze.

It was one of three fourth placed finishes in a disappointing campaign for Cycling New Zealand, which has seen it lose half a million dollars a year in funding.

Despite losing the funding, the main goal for the National Track Championships this weekend is find new talent according to Cycling head coach Dayel Cheatley.

"Despite the Olympics, we've had the best four years we've ever had internationally as a squad," said Cheatley.

"There's some exciting talent coming through, and that's what this week is about."
