Video: Olympic rower Emma Twigg swapping oar for ball

We've seen plenty of league players go to rugby union, and just this week a cyclist joined Team New Zealand to contest the America's Cup.

Now former rowing world champion Emma Twigg is the latest to test the waters of a switch of codes, trying her hand at Sevens Rugby.

The 29-year-old decided to sign up for today's Go For Gold testing which is looking for athletes for the 2020 Black Ferns Sevens Olympic team.

"I've always had a burning desire to give rugby or sevens a go and met a lot of the girls in Rio and got along with them really well," said Twigg.

"I managed to trick Rebecca Scown into coming down with me. She didn't quite know what she was getting herself into."

Scown isn't going to leave rowing, but Twigg has retired from rowing and looking for what's next.

One thing the Black Ferns are looking for is height, and Twigg fits into the category as she stands at 1.82m tall.

Twigg felt like she under-performed in her trial, but enjoyed the experience.

"I think today proved that rowers don't necessarily make great rugby players but it was good fun and that was what I intended for it."

Even if she doesn't make the cut, Twigg's enjoyed finding out if she's got what it takes.
