Kiwi rugby players detained over rape complaint in France

Two New Zealand rugby players are among six detained and questioned by police in France following a complaint by a young women she was raped after meeting them in a nightclub.

Former Waikato backrower Rory Grice and Marlbrough's Dylan Hayes, along with Grenoble teammates Dennis Coulson, Chris Farrel, former Wallaby Peter Kimlin and French hooker Loick Jammes are the players in question, according to AFP reports.

The women alleges she met the players in Bordeaux following Grenobles' French Top 14 match against Bordeaux-Begles on Sunday, March 12 [NZ time].

Hayes was questioned as a witness and has since been released.

Grenoble has sacked the players involved in the alleged incident.

"In order to avoid any confusion between the investigation, which concerns individual and private behaviour, and Grenoble Rugby club, we have decided to immediately lay off the players concerned as a precautionary measure," the club said in a statement.

Clun president Eric Pilaud Club President Eric Pilaud explained that there would not be an internal investigation, saying he “respects the presumption of innocence” and “doesn’t think the players want to answer our [the team staff’s] questions”.
