America's Cup 2017: Former Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker involved in pre-race crash with Team Great Britain

Dean Barker's quest for the America's Cup with Team Japan got off to a rocky start following a pre-start collision with Team Great Britain (TGB) in Bermuda.

TGB, led by Sir Ben Ainslie, collided with the Japan boat 25 seconds before the race started, but surprisingly nobody was injured.

"Obviously we had a bit of a 'love tap', as Ben would call it," Barker said post-race.

"It was a pretty hairy moment at the time.

"Seeing their hull landing on our boat but we will have to assess the damage. It broke our steering wheel, but it's the nature of the racing as it gets closer and harder.

"We won't really know until a bit later on tonight."

It is the second incident this week involving Ainslie who collided with Team New Zealand during a practice race.

Ainslie's boat however suffered more damage, and it has forced Team Great Britain to race against the clock as they face both Team New Zealand and Oracle Team USA tomorrow.

"Our boat is pretty badly damaged," Ainslie told media after the race.

"It has a sizable hole in the port hull, by the time we got to the dock she was on the way down and it was all hands on deck [to stop the boat from sinking].

"[Dean] did a good job and got the overlap and we just got slightly too high on the foil, which can happen easily in these boats, and we got the sideways slip and we came together.

"It's unfortunate that it happened, but when you are pushing these boats as hard as we are, it's inevitably going to happen from time to time.

"Our shore team are fantastic guys and I know they're going to do the best job possible to get us out on the water as quickly as possible."
