The first day of the America's Cup in Bermuda has been postponed due to high winds.

Earlier in the week, wind gusts were predicted to reach over 30 knots on the opening day, creating dangerous conditions for sailing.

The Louis Vuitton Qualifier races were scheduled to start on Saturday morning (NZT), however they will now commence on Sunday (NZT) when there are much better sailing conditions predicted.

Organisers have said they will add an extra hour to the first two days in order to make up for the time lost.

"This is clearly a decision we have not taken lightly and appreciate the inconvenience caused to the sellout crowd," CEO of the ACEA Sir Russell Coutts said in a statement.

"Our primary concern however, is always safety for everyone involved in the America’s Cup.

"We are adding an hour to the race window on both Saturday and Sunday to run extra races with the aim of getting back on schedule."
