Johnathan Thurston has been ruled out of the first match of this year's State of Origin series after failing to recover from a shoulder injury.
Suffering the injury in Australia's ANZAC Test win over New Zealand, Thurston had already been nursing a calf injury which threatened to derail his whole season.
Picked by Kevin Walters as the 18th man in the Queensland squad, it will be the first Origin match he's missed in 36, since his debut in 2005.
The 34-year-old admitted to the Channel 7 Network yesterday that he could potentially end his career if he continued playing with the injury, opting to sit out in hope to make the next two.
Thurston will remain in camp with the team as an advisor to standoff Anthony Milford who will make his Origin debut on Wednesday.
