America's Cup 2017: Oracle helmsman Jimmy Spithill teases second boat

The America's Cup mind games have been simmering away for the past week but today it just came to the boil as Peter Burling and Jimmy Spithill sat alongside each other for the last press conference before racing starts.

Speculation about whether Oracle is building a second boat was at the top of the agenda after pictures surfaced from the Team New Zealand camp of Oracle crew taking two red bows across to SoftBank Team Japan's base.

"I think it just shows you guys will fall for anything - it never ceases to amaze me," said Spithill.

As the defender, Oracle are allowed to have a second boat (as long as a small part of the hull is constructed in the country of origin of the syndicate). As challenger, Team New Zealand are not allowed to have a second boat. A rule set by Oracle.

Spithill implied his crew carried the bows across to Team Japan in front of cameras on purpose.

"It's no coincidence that we saw the kiwi spy boat out there. I just can't believe you guys fell for it."

But when asked how Oracle's back-up boat was progressing, Spithill replied "we're hoping not to need it. We've got our race boat and that's all we're planning to race."
