America's Cup to be broadcast free-to-air - but with 1.5hr delay

America's Cup races will be broadcast free-to-air, with Emirates Team New Zealand just confirmed to face off against cup-defender Team Oracle.

The coverage will be available for viewing on Prime from 6:30am each match day - a full 1.5 hours after it has aired on Sky Sport.

The announcement comes after Duncan Garner and The AM Show launched a petition to broadcast the America's Cup races on free-to-air television if Emirates Team NZ made the final.

"This is an event of national significance and every New Zealander should be able to participate," The AM Show wrote on their petition.

Garner said it is a victory for New Zealanders who don't have Sky, and those who signed the petition.

"That means if you don't have Sky, which is 1.5 million New Zealanders, you will be able to watch this. And to those 5500 people who signed the petition, thank you so much. It is your victory," he said.

Mark Richardson was not perturbed by the delayed coverage.

"Because of the hours you can get up and not be aware of what's happened just prior. Just turn your phone off and treat it as live," he said.

The America's Cup will be won by the first team to secure seven race wins.

The first race will kick off on Sunday 18 June.
