There's heartbreak for Kiwi basketball player Tai Webster after he was overlooked at the 2017 NBA draft in Brooklyn.

The 22-year old was an outside chance to be selected late in the second-round, but was overlooked in a talent-stocked draft.

The guard spent four years playing at the University of Nebraska, averaging 17.0 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.0 assists in his final year at college.

Despite not being selected, the dream is not over for the Kiwi, who still can sign with a team as a unrestricted free agent or to be signed to the G League (previously known as the D League).

Webster was looking to become the fourth New Zealander behind Sean Marks, Kirk Penny and Steven Adams to play in the NBA.

Adams' team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, decieded to draft Oklahoma native Terrance Ferguson with the 21st pick.

The 19-year old spent last year playing for the Adelaide 36ers in the National Basketball League, playing in 30 games for the franchise.

Ferguson is only the third first-round NBA draft pick that has previously played NBL after Luc Longley in 1991 and Chris Anstey in 1997.

Kiwi and current Brooklyn Nets General Manager Sean Marks drafted centre Jarrett Allen with the 22nd pick while picking up Aleksandar Vezenko with the 57th.

The Nets also traded Brook Lopez along with the 27th pick (Kyle Kuzma) to the Los Angeles Lakers for D'Angelo Russell and Timofey Mosgov.

Australian-born player Jonah Bolden will join fellow countrymen Ben Simmons at the Philadelphia 76ers after he was selected with the 36th pick.
