Video: UFC heavyweight Cain Velasquez 'rooting' for a Mark Hunt knockout win at UFC Fight Night Auckland

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is in no doubt who he wants to see win the main event of UFC Fight Night Auckland on Sunday.

The 34-year-old is in New Zealand on a promotional escapade with Monster Energy, and will be cageside when Kiwi Mark Hunt takes on American Derrick Lewis in a heavyweight slugfest.

Speaking exclusively to Newshub, the Californian is expecting a great fight between two guys who like to throw hands, but he is hoping the home crowd will go home happy.

"I want to see Mark Hunt win the fight," Velasquez told Newshub.

"Being here in New Zealand, with the home crowd behind him, yeah that's what I would like to see."

Velasquez added: "When you have Mark Hunt and a guy like Derrick Lewis, both guys are big with good hands, knockout style guys but we will see what happens but I am rooting for Mark Hunt."

The number two-ranked contender to Stipe Miocic's heavyweight title, Velasquez is currently on the sideline recovering from multiple injuries and hasn't fought since July.

That layoff is likely to cost the popular American 18 months of his career, but recovery is at the forefront of his mind given his history of coming back too early from previous impairments.

Could the winner of Sunday's heavyweight clash be a potential welcome back present for Velasquez before he makes another run at the championship?

"Anyone that fights on the UFC roster that is a heavyweight then yes, I could potentially fight, so yeah that is definitely a possibility.

"Whoever the best guy in the world is, that's who I want to fight."

"I'm still recovering from certain injuries - I had back surgery in January. I think next year I will be ready to fight and for me it's always been about who the UFC puts in front of me.

"I just want to fight the best guys that are out there. I think if I have to fight one more before I get a title shot then I'll be okay with that."

Velasquez trains in California with the famed American Kickboxing Academy, which is home to former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and current light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.

Cormier is currently preparing for a highly anticipated rematch with the only man to ever beat him, Jon Jones.

The two share an intense rivalry that will culminate on July 30 for the light heavyweight championship.

With Jones dominating the later stages of their first bout back in January 2015, most pundits have the 29-year-old as a big favourite when the two face-off at UFC 214.

Velasquez however thinks his teammate has benefited from that loss, gaining an intense hunger for revenge, matched with the confidence he gained in finally winning a UFC championship a few months after that loss to Jones.

Velasquez has seen the former Olympic wrestler go to another level.

"I'm always confident in him because I know what he can bring to the table.

"Last time he fought Jon I think it was a tough fight with Jon getting the better of him [Cormier], but now we get another chance and with how much better Daniel has got since then I think he will come out on top."

The bout will be Jones' first since he copped a one-year suspension for performance enhancing drug use in 2016.
