Former All Black Mike Delany will make a return to New Zealand rugby with the Bay of Plenty Steamers in the Mitre 10 Cup.

The 35-year-old made nine appearances for the Highlanders and 22 for the Chiefs at Super Rugby level, playing his sole Test for the All Blacks against Italy in Milan in 2009.

Delany departed New Zealand back in 2011 to play in Japan followed by France and England.

Granted an early release from his three-year deal with Aviva Premiership side Newcastle Falcons, the versatile playmaker said a return to New Zealand was always on the cards.

"My family and I had thought long and hard about when would be the right time to come back to New Zealand," Delany said.

"And when this opportunity came up with Bay of Plenty Rugby, it just felt like something we couldn’t pass up.

Delany's scored 489 points in 61 appearances for the Steamers.
