Professional footballer Abdelhak Nouri has been diagnosed with "serious and permanent brain damage" after collapsing on the pitch on Sunday (NZT).

The 20-year-old, who plays for Dutch giants Ajax, was in the midst of a pre-season friendly in Austria when he suddenly folded to the ground.

He was airlifted to a hospital in Austria where he was put into an induced coma.

Initial neurological tests conducted during the week were unable to conclude the extent of any long-term effects.

However, the club tweeted on Friday morning (NZT) that it was "deeply saddened" to confirm that although his heart was working normally, he had indeed lost function in parts of his brain.

"The diagnosis is that a large part of his brain is no longer functioning and that the chance of recovery of these crucial brain functions is nil," they continued.

"This is most likely due to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain after the midfielder became unwell during the Ajax - Werder Bremen match in Hippach.

"It is now expected Nouri will be taken to a hospital in Amsterdam in the near future for further care."

Nouri, who made his debut for Ajax with a goal last September, had apparently experienced an irregular heartbeat during the match.

The incident comes a little over a month after Ivory Coast international Cheick Tiote collapsed in training with Chinese club Beijing Enterprises and died on June 5.
