Swiss top seed Stan Wawrinka has become the first casualty of this year's Championships, stunned by Russian world number 49 Daniil Medvedev 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-1 late on day one.

The Russian - who's nicknamed the Bear - played a high risk game against the world number five, leaving little margin for error on his shots.

While it wasn't always on song, it worked with Medvedev making more than he missed.

He changed up his pace expertly on his favourite surface to stifle the Swiss who looked to be struggling with a leg injury that's troubled him the entire first half of the season.

But nothing can be taken away from Medvedev who made it through to semi-final last week's Eastbourne tournament, losing to Djokovic in a tight 6-4 6-4 struggle.

"Right now I don't know what I have to say. I'm just really happy," Medvedev said.

"Wimbledon is my favourite Slam. Centre Court at Wimbledon even one year ago if someone would say I would win, or play, I would say I'm joking.

"I've had a great grass court season and I knew Stan has had some problems at Queen's. It's my first Grand Slam win at my favourite tournament so I had to kiss the grass."

Medvedev will play Belgium's Ruben Bemelmans in the second set who beat veteran Tommy Haas in four sets.
