All Blacks legend Sir Colin Meads is "extremely unwell" according to wife Lady Verna Meads.

The man affectionately known as "Pinetree" is reportedly struggling in his battle with pancreatic cancer, with which he was diagnosed back in August 2016.

"He's holding on," Lady Verna told Farirfax.

She confirmed Meads, now 81 years of age, was neither at Waikato Hospital nor their Te Kuiti home, and requested privacy for the family.

The 55-Test forward's last public appearance was for the unveiling of his statue in June.
