Double scullers Chris Harris and John Storey aim for gold at rowing world championships

His failure to medal at the Rio Olympics has left New Zealand rower Chris Harris determined to climb the world championship podium in Florida next week.

Harris, teamed with Robbie Manson, finished 11th at last year's Olympic double sculls, despite heading to Brazil in dominant form.

Manson has since moved into the single-sculls boat, with two-time Olympic champion Mahe Drysdale taking time away from the sport.

In Manson's wake, John Storey has joined Harris in the double  a combination that has enjoyed success so far in 2017.

"It is a good team," says Harris. "We get along very well and the boat is going fast, which is good.

"We will go out and race as hard as we can, and it looks like the medals are up for grabs."

The duo won World Cup events in Poland and Switzerland earlier in the year, and are among the favourites heading into the year's biggest regatta, starting on Sunday.

But winning the World Cup races won't mean anything, unless they win gold in Florida, according to Storey.

"It is the pinnacle event of the year," he says. "The World Cups are like little build-ups, where people sometimes hide their cards.

"Everybody will be peaking for this. It's super important heading into Tokyo [Olympics 2020], because you want to tick all the boxes as you go through.

"Winning gold at World Cups is great. I've never experienced that at a world championships and I'm sure it would feel twice as good, as it is the pinnacle event.

"Getting that gold would be awesome, so hopefully we can keep that winning feeling going."
