Former New Zealand Breakers forward Akil Mitchell has signed a contract with NBA franchise the Brooklyn Nets.

The 25-year-old was the victim of a horrific injury in January when his eye was injured after he was poked in the face.

The incident resulted in his eyeball falling out of the socket which halted the match for 15 minutes while the American received medical treatment.

Mitchell has made a full recovery and after plying his trade in the NBA Summer League he has been recruited by the Nets' New Zealand General Manager, Sean Marks.

Mitchell averaged 9.5 points per game adding 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

The former University of Virginia alum had been playing for the Nets development side in Long Island.
