Roger Federer through to US Open quarter-finals after straight sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber

Roger Federer is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open, after beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in straight sets at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The World No. 3 defeated the German 6-4 6-2 7-5 in one hour and 49 minutes.

The 36-year-old has struggled with a back injury in the build-up to the tournament and left the court after the second set for a medical timeout.

Federer did not face a break point and won in straight sets for the second time in a row after being pushed to five sets in each of the first two rounds.

The 19-time Grand Slam champion will now face Juan Martin del Potro who overcame illness and a two-set deficit to win his fourth-round match against Dominic Thiem.

The 24th seed won 1-6 2-6 6-1 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 in three hours and 35 minutes.

It will be a rematch of the 2009 U.S. Open final, when del Potro won his only Grand Slam title.

Federer is looking forward to facing an old foe.

"It's great to see him back on the tour. He's had a rough side for a lot of years with his wrist. It's wonderful for our sport really," Federer said.

"To play him here again after our epic final in 2009 is great for both of us. I think we're both looking forward to it. At least I am."
