The man considered to be the next All Blacks captain has re-signed with New Zealand Rugby through to the end of 2021.

Openside flanker Sam Cane has recommitted to New Zealand Rugby, the Chiefs, and Bay of Plenty for the next four seasons.

The 25-year-old has made the number seven jersey his own since the retirement of Richie McCaw and is expected to take over as skipper when Kieran Read retires.

"Even though I've been in the All Blacks for five years now, there is still heaps more I want to achieve in the black jersey," Cane said.

"I'm in a leadership role with the All Blacks and the Chiefs and that's something I enjoy, and I want to contribute any way I can in helping lead and drive both those teams to succeed."

Cane made his All Blacks debut back in 2012 against Ireland and has gone on to play 49 Tests for New Zealand, scoring 10 tries.

The All Blacks face Australia in the third Bledisloe Cup Test this weekend, in Brisbane before departing for Europe where they will face the Barbarians, France, French XV, Scotland and Wales.
