A second fight between Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin appears inevitable after the World Boxing Council (WBC) ordered an immediate rematch between the pair.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed that the sanctioning body will enforce a sequel to their scintillating battle last month, which ended in a controversial draw.

"It’s the fight that the world wants to see. It's the fight that both fighters want," said Sulaiman at the council's convention in Azerbaijan.

"Hopefully it will be a second chapter of what we saw on September 16."

Responding to the announcement, Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler stated he was confident the Kazakhstani would win the rematch.

"I think you’ll see Gennady knowing that he has to win more than eight rounds to get the decision, he’ll be even more persistent in the rematch," Loeffler said.

It was widely believed that Golovkin won their first bout, but the result fell victim to a highly dubious scorecard by judge Adelaide Byrd who inexplicably ruled that Alvarez had won comfortably, which resulted in the stalemate.

Byrd has since been suspended from high-level fights.

The rematch could take place between March and May next year, with Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo a particularly attractive date.
