Wellington flanker Vaea Fifita will start a Test for just the second time on Sunday morning, after being named in the All Blacks side to play France in Paris.

The 25-year-old announced himself to the world, scoring a wonderful 50m try against Argentina in September's Rugby Championship Test.

Fifita replaces Liam Squire, who has been dealing with an illness, since arriving in Europe almost two-weeks ago.

The 23-man-squad appears to be the best available for coach Steve Hansen and his selection team, with two players from the side that lost to the Wallabies in Brisbane last month seemingly singled out for not quite meeting the mark.

Openside flanker Ardie Savea has been dropped, while lock forward Scott Barrett has been relegated to the bench

Hansen said the latter has gone missing on defence in recent times, replaced by the in-form Luke Romano, who had a great domestic season with national premiership winners Canterbury.

Romano's Crusaders and Canterbury teammate Matt Todd replaces Savea, with the All Blacks brains trust looking for more physicality at the breakdown.

Hansen also said Todd's ability to generate turnovers on defence edged him ahead of the Hurricanes flyer.

Elsewhere, Rieko Ioane has fended off a bout of the mumps to take his place on the left wing, while Sonny Bill Williams will start in the 12 jersey, coming off his best Test of 2017 in Brisbane.

Veteran flanker Jerome Kaino's tour is over, the 34-year-old succumbing to a posterior cruciate ligament strain, and he will head back to New Zealand early next week.

Auckland flanker Akira Ioane will join the squad on Monday, after playing for the Maori All Blacks against the French Barbarians this weekend.

Injury cover Luke Whitelock will also head home next week, once Ioane has joined the squad.

The team will be captained by Kieran Read.
