Rugby League World Cup: Fiji draw inspiration from Tonga for Kiwis quarter-final showdown

Fiji utility Jarryd Hayne is hoping his side can draw inspiration from Tonga's win over New Zealand, when they take on the Kiwis in a Rugby Leaue World Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

New Zealand and Fiji have never faced each other before, and with the Kiwis coming off a loss, Hayne knows they will be determined to bounce back.

Fiji, are unbeaten at the World Cup, with big wins over Italy, Wales and the United States, scoring 32 tries in the process, but they know they will have to step it up another notch, if they are to compete with New Zealand.

After watching Tonga rally from a 16-2 halftime deficit to beat the Kiwis in Hamilton, Hayne hopes his troops can do the same in Wellington.

"From the get-go, when they were in Tonga, from the way they were accepted, from the celebration point of view, they have gathered that momentum and been able to use it in their favour.

"It is something that we will definitly need to put in our way, as well, knowing how much the islands look up to us and look to us to do the impossible."

The Bati have made the semifinals at the last two World Cups, so they know the pressure is on, if they are to return for the third consecutive campaign.

"For us, making the semifinals at the last two World Cups, there is defiantly that aspect, so some pressure this year.

"I don't think we go away from what the islands are about, and that is to enjoy each other's company and play hard for each other.

"That is what we have been doing and it is going to be a huge Test on Saturday against the Kiwis."

If Fiji are to beat the Kiwis, Hayne knows they must shut down New Zealand's halves and physical forward pack.

"I think [Te Marie]  Martin and [Shaun] Johnson, and their forward pack as well, are probably one of the best in the competition, so that is their strength.

"The way they play will determine the outcome of the game, so it is up to us to match them in every area, put our faith into the action and pray to the heavens open up to give us a little bit of help."

Fijian prop Ashton Sims agrees with Hayne, saying the NZ forward pack is their strength, and he knows they have to take their chances if they are to trump New Zealand.

"We did a little bit of video on them during the week, but New Zealand is a world-class side.

"We are going to go out there and exploit some of their weaknesses - they don't have many, so things we have identified, we have to do it right every time.

"I expect them to be full-blooded and ready to go. It doesn't matter who puts on that Kiwi jersey, there is always that pride and passion there, and it is the same with the Fiji Bati.

"Whoever we put in that white jersey, we know they are going to play 100 percent, so that will make a great game come Saturday."
