Former NRL head coach Brian Smith is set for a return, with Nine.com reporting, he will join the Warriors staff for the 2018 season.

The 63-year-old is the third-most capped coach in NRL history, but hasn't coached in the league for five years.

Nine reports Smith is considering a role that will directly assist Stephen Kearney at the struggling club.

The veteran coach was sacked by the Roosters in 2012 and most recently assisted David Kidwell during the Kiwis' disastrous World Cup campaign, where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Fiji.

According to Nine's 'The Mole', Smith is widely considered one of the sport's most respected analysts and his experience would be invaluable to Kearney, who guided the club to 13th in 2017.
