The Black Sticks women are one win away from being crowned champions of the World Hockey League tournament in Auckland after a stunning reversal in form.

The New Zealanders lost all three of their group games, but are through to the final after beating Argentina and then England 1-0 in Friday's semi-final.

Goal-scorer Olivia Merry is proud of the way the team have turned it around, and is still trying to comprehend what they achieved.

"It's bit surreal at the moment," she says.

"We always knew that we had it in us, and the first three performances probably weren't our best performances. To come away with two awesome results is fantastic."

Despite the narrow margin of victory, the Kiwis dominated the game from the outset and were rewarded with a goal to Merry off a corner.

The 25-year-old was delighted to get her name on the score sheet, and more so to see New Zealand convert their pressure into goals.

"We dictated the pace of the game to them. We always wanted to put them under a lot of pressure at the back, and they got quite a few new players.

"We wanted to build on what we did against Argentina, and it's always so hard to come from a win but we knew it was always going to be tougher again coming up against an England side that never say die.

"It's something I've been working on and it's a secret weapon we have - probably not so secret now."

The Black Sticks now face the prospect of either playing The Netherlands or South Korea in the final, which will be determined in the second semi-final on Saturday.

New Zealand captain Stacey Michelsen believes the result could go either way, but suggests the Dutch may just have too much class.

"Obviously Holland are in really good form and they always are. They are such a consistently strong team, but you never know in this kind of tournament, so we'll be watching it really closely and scouting both teams.
