Chris Wood failed to trouble the scorers but his Burnley FC club have continued climbing to giddy heights in the English Premier League following a 1-0 win over Stoke City.

Traditional strugglers Burnley are fourth after notching a ninth win from 17 matches, securing victory through an 89th-minute strike from substitute forward Ashley Barnes.

All Whites striker Wood, who has scored four goals in 13 EPL appearances, had a quiet match and was replaced with eight minutes remaining.

It was a typical win from his team, who boast one of the league's tightest defences.

Stoke enjoyed a clear superiority in possession and chances but couldn't crack open a Burnley outfit who have conceded just 12 goals this season.

Their position on the table could dip on Thursday (NZT), depending on results for Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, who are just below them with a game in hand.

Chelsea have bounced back from their shock Premier League defeat on the weekend by beating Huddersfield while Burnley edged Stoke to go fourth and Crystal Palace scored two late goals to overcome Watford.

Chelsea recorded a comfortable 3-1 win at Aaron Mooy's Huddersfield, to get back in the winners' circle after a surprise defeat to West Ham.

Goals from Tiemoue Bakayoko, Willian and Pedro put the Terriers to the sword and moved Antonio Conte's men level on 35 points with second-placed Manchester United, who host Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Bakayoko opened the scoring midway through the first half when his clipped finish was deflected in off Chris Lowe.

Willian doubled the lead on the stroke of half-time by heading home Marcos Alonso's cross and Pedro made it three five minutes after the restart with a smart finish into the top corner.

Laurent Depoitre headed home for Huddersfield with the last meaningful touch of the game, but it counted for nothing.

Crystal Palace scored two goals in three minutes at the death to earn a come- from-behind 2-1 win over 10-man Watford and extend their unbeaten run to six games.

The ninth-placed Hornets looked to have the points in the bag as they led from the third minute when Daryl Janmaat headed home at the far post.

Tom Cleverley saw red late on for Watford for two yellow cards and then it all changed around as Bakary Sako levelled in the 89th minute with a scrappy finish and then in the second minute of time added on James McArthur forced an unlikely winner.

The win lifted Palace off the foot of the ladder to 17th.
