Double Olympic champion rower Mahe Drysdale has a lot of catching up to do if he's to get his seat back in the single sculls boat for the next European season.

The 39-year-old's finished a distant sixth, some 14-seconds behind race winner Robbie Manson in today's Christmas regatta final on Lake Karapiro.

John Storey finished in second place, while his New Zealand double sculls partner Chris Harris was third.

Drysdale's rustiness comes after taking more than 12 months off following his gold medal performance at the Rio Olympics.

Manson, who's also returning from injury's made no secret of the fact that he wants the seat after setting a world record time in Poland back in June.
