Former Sydney Captain Mark Rudan has been appointed as the new head coach of the Wellington Phoenix.

The 42-year-old has inked a two year deal with the struggling A-League club.

Rudan enjoyed a well-travelled playing career, including stints in Germany, China, Japan, Switzerland and his native Australia which included a championship title with Sydney in 2006.

The robust defender transitioned into coaching in 2011 and has since won multiple league titles in Australian domestic competitions.

Rudan is excited about his first venture into head coaching in the A-League with the New Zealand outfit.

"The Phoenix have a reputation for giving young Australian and New Zealand footballers their first starts in the A-League and now as a coach I have my first A-League coaching opportunity," Rudan said.

"There is huge potential at the Phoenix, already signed for the squad is a core group of experienced A-League players as well as some of the most exciting young talents in the League and we have the funding for some quality visa players ready to go.

"I couldn't be more excited about the season ahead."
