Former Springbok winger Ashwin Willemse has sensationally stormed off a live TV broadcast, after accusing his fellow presenters of "undermining" him.

During SuperSport's post-match coverage of the Lions' Super Rugby win over the Brumbies, Willemse seemingly took offence to the behaviour of co-hosts Naas Botha and Nick Mallet.

Willemse spoke of being labelled a "quota player" and objected to being "patronised by two individuals who played in the apartheid/segregated era".

Botha and Mallet both played for the Springboks, while Mallet served as coach from 1997-2000.

Willemse then approached the duo, before placing his papers on the desk and carrying on.

"I can't work with people who undermine other people. You can sit there and you can laugh about it, but you know exactly what happened.

"I don't mind being ridiculous, I'm glad it happens on air, so people can see."

SuperSport host Motshidisi Mohono called the incident "unfortunate", as they ended the coverage.

The feedback of the incident has been mixed, with many criticising the lack of professionalism shown by Willemse, while some praised his actions.

Willemse played 36 tests for the Springboks and was the South African Player of the Year, Young Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year in 2003.

SuperSport has confirmed it is investigating the incident.
