Super Rugby: Chiefs rest Brodie Retallick for Jaguares clash in Rotorua

  • 03/05/2018

Experienced Chiefs lock Brodie Retallick has been given the week off and will miss Friday's Super Rugby clash against the Jaguares in Rotorua.

With Retallick out, Michael Allardice will start in the No 4 jersey.

Assistant coach Tabai Matson said the decision to rest their superstar forward against the Argentinan side tomorrow night is to ensure the 26-year-old is in the best shape possible for the Chiefs upcoming trip to South Africa.

"He has been phenomenal," said Matson. "He brings the kitchen sink every week, and it just looked like he needed a rest.

"So it's a great opportunity to give someone else a go and also to give him a breather before he goes to Africa."

In total, the Chiefs have made four changes to their starting side for Friday's game.

Alex Nankivell comes into the starting side for centre Johnny Fa'auli, who is also being rested - having played every minute of the team's season so far, while Ton Pulu returns from injury to take up residence on the wing, replacing Sean Wainui.

Liam Mssam will start in the number eight jersey, with Taleni Seu likely to miss the rest of the season due to a back injury.

On the bench, there is a potential debut for Levi Aumua back from injury, and for Bay of Plenty loose forward Jesse Parete in as injury cover.
